Présentation

After-work: Understanding zirconia to avoid failures

Having appeared in dentistry over twenty years ago, zirconia is not, strictly speaking, a truly "new" material. What is new, however, is not the existence of a zirconia material, but rather a family of zirconias with different but also complementary properties and fields of application. Whether for public health considerations or due to our patients' demand for more aesthetic solutions, "zirconia" has become an essential material today. But since there is no universal zirconia material, it is important to know the available zirconia materials and choose the most suitable for the clinical situation encountered in order to avoid failures, particularly mechanical (the worst being fracture) or aesthetic (such as the grayish appearance of the finalized restoration). This choice must be based on simple and rational decision criteria. Zirconia bonding is also a subject of debate, ranging from mechanical cementing to adhesive bonding. However, today's solutions are reliable and effective provided that 1) the correct bonding method is indicated and 2) well-defined protocols are followed. We will also take this opportunity to focus on vertical preparations, known as "vertipreps", from their indications to their bonding, including clinical and laboratory steps.

Objectifs pédagogiques

1. Identify the different families of zirconia and their clinical applications.

2. Learn how to choose the most suitable zirconia to limit mechanical or aesthetic failures.

3. Master bonding protocols and understand the indications for cementing vs. bonding.
